Hillsborough River State Park
Hillsborough River State Park is made up of more than 2,990 acres and seven miles of trails. Within this beautiful state park, guests can view wildlife in their natural habitats. You can even canoe the Hillsborough River to catch glimpses of birds, turtles, and alligators.
Alafia River State Recreation Area
With 17 miles of bike trails suited for different ability levels, as well as lengthy hiking trails and horse trails, the Alafia River State Recreation Area is a popular spot for wildlife viewing for Tampa residents and visitors. Guests can also canoe and fish along the Alafia River and lakes within the state park.
Boyd Hill Nature Preserve and Lake
The Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is home to five distinct eco-systems within 245 acres. Guests are welcome to hike the trails and explore nature independently or take a guided tour through the preserve.
Tampa Area Farms

Those wanting to get up close and personal with crocodiles should head to Croc Encounters, a nonprofit sanctuary that rescues crocodiles, as well as birds, reptiles, and mammals. You can take a self-guided tour on a Saturday or enjoy a guided tour on weekdays.
TECO Manatee Viewing Center
TECO is a state and federally designated manatee sanctuary that welcomes visitors. This sanctuary is designed to help protect manatees as well as educate the public through viewings, interactive exhibits, and question and answer sessions. For those who want to learn more about these special mammals, also known as sea cows, this is the place to go.
Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay Nature Preserve
Bird watchers will enjoy the 35-acre nature preserve at the Grand Hyatt. The beautiful nature trail is a selling point of the Grand Hyatt. Guests often see Egrets, Herons, and flying fish as they walk the trail that leads to the Tampa Bay shores.
Lettuce Lake Regional Park
Another popular destination for bird watchers is the Lettuce Lake Regional Park. This park is located in Tampa as has a 3,500-foot boardwalk and a 40-foot observation tower that makes spotting wildlife even easier. In addition to seeing an array of birds, visitors may also see alligators.
Big Cat Rescue
Big Cat Rescue is a sanctuary for abandoned or abused big cats and is home to more than 80 big cats. You can pre-arrange a visit to this unique 67-acre animal sanctuary on their website.
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
Not only does Busch Gardens offer thrilling rides, but it also offers animal adventures. The zoo is one of the largest in America and is home to 12,000 animals, including exotic wildlife. Guests can take a self-guided zoo tour, or they can enjoy specialized tours and safaris.
Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park
This smaller, local zoo is very family friendly. Even with its smaller size, it has a collection of more than 1,300 animals, including elephants, penguins, and hippos.
Beyond simply viewing the 20,000+ aquatic animals and plants at the Florida Aquarium, visitors can also enjoy up close and personal aquatic encounters. For example, guests can snorkel and swim with fish and sharks at the aquarium.
A short 45-minute drive from Tampa, the Giraffe Ranch offers one-of-a-kind opportunities to see giraffes in a safari-like experience. In addition to giraffes, the sanctuary is also home to rhinos, zebras, hippos, and more.
Another truly unique way to get up close to some of your favorite animals is to visit Safari Wilderness in nearby Lakeland. Visitors can go on a safari through this quiet 260 acres to see the exotic camels by vehicle, kayak, or even camel!
